디자인 가구의 가능성: 철도 아름다운 가구가 될 수 있다
미국에서 공간디자인을 공부한 레어 로우(rare raw) 양윤선 대표. 디자이너로서 다른 삶을 선택할 수도 있었지만 양대표는 다른 곳에서 가능성을 찾게 되는데요. 바로 아버지가 운영해오던 철재 집기회사에서 누구나 집에 들이고 싶은 철재 가구로의 변신을 생각하게 됩니다. 흰색과 검정색 일색이던 철재 집기에 다양한 색상과 디자인 감각을 적용한 철재 가구 브랜드 ‘레어 로우(rare raw)’를 런칭하게 됩니다. 보기 드문 이란 뜻의 “Rare”와 날 것 그대로 란 뜻의 “Raw”를 합친 브랜드 네임이라고 합니다. 기존의 대량생산으로 제품의 가격을 낮춘 철재 집기에서 벋어난 높은 품질과 디자인 감각을 추구하는 ‘프리미엄 가구 브랜드’를 만들겠다는 뜻이 담겨 있다고 합니다.

철재 가구의 편견
‘레어 로우(rare raw)’의 발전에는 아버지가 운영하던 철재 집기 회사인’Simple Line’이 있어서 가능했다고 말을 할 수 있을 것 같습니다. 그때 당시 철재로 만든 집기류는 차갑고 날카롭고 투박하다는 인식, 대신 대량 생산으로 가격이 저렴해서 ‘대형 매장에 물건 진열용 집기류로 쓰인다’는 편견을 디자인으로 바꿔 보자는, 철재 가구를 다른 관점으로 바라보게 만들어 주게 하지 않았을까 하는 생각이 듭니다.

양윤선 대표의 ‘레어 로우(rare raw)'가 제일 먼저 한일은 무엇일까요? 바로 철재 가구의 투박함을 숨기는 일이었다고 합니다. 고운 가루 입자를 철에 고르게 뿌려 색을 입히고 가구 표면을 매끈하게 만들어주는 작업인 “분채 도장”을 적용하여 이제까지 적용하기 않았던 빨강, 노랑, 초록, 파란색 같은 원색을 사용한 새로운 느낌의 산뜻한 가구를 선보이게 됩니다.

‘시스템000’은 ‘레어 로우(rare raw)’의 디자인 철학을 그대로 보여주는 제품이라고 할 수 있습니다.
아모레퍼시픽과 진행할 프로젝트를 진행하면서 아이디어를 발전시킨 제품이라고 하는데요. “화장품 매대를 무조건 밝고 반짝이는 공간으로 만들어야 한다”는 요구 조건을 맞추기 위해서 선반을 어디서나 불이 들어오게끔 “전원 플러그”로 만들면 어떨까 라는 엉뚱한 상상에서 시작되었다고 합니다.
철재 기둥에 뚤려 있는 선반 고정용 작은 구멍들은 전류가 흐르게 디자인되어 있습니다. 여기에 막대 모양의 LED 조명을 구멍에 꽂으면 선반의 어디든지 조명을 설치할 수가 있습니다. 물론 LED 등은 자석으로 만들어져 있어서 철로 되어 있는 선반 어디든 탈부착이 가능하답니다. USB 커넥터를 구멍에 연결하면 휴대폰 충전도 가능하겠죠?
이런 철재 가구의 유니크한 디자인과 기능성을 제일 먼저 알아 봐준 것은 바로 다름아닌 호텔이었답니다. ‘레어 로우(rare raw)’ 와 글래드 호텔과 협업으로 시스템 선반으로 호텔 전 객실을 꾸민 것이었는데요. 각각의 다른 색상들로 이루어진 판넬을 선반에 고정하여 만들어진 사무용 책상과 시스템 가구…. 상상이 가시나요?

To meet the requirement that "the cosmetics stand should be made into a bright and shiny space," She began with a wild imagination about what it would be like to make the shelves "power plugs" so that they could light up anywhere.
Small holes for fastening shelves drilled into steel poles are designed to allow current to flow. You can insert a rod-shaped LED light into the hole to install the light anywhere on the shelf. The LED lights are made of magnets, so they can be attached and removed from any steel shelf. If you connect the USB connector to the hole, you can charge your phone, right?
The first thing that noticed the unique design and functionality of this steel furniture was the hotel. In collaboration with 'rare raw' and GLAD Hotels, the entire hotel room was decorated with system shelves. Panels of different colors, each fixed to a shelf, made of office desks and system furniture... Can you imagine?
또한 유명한 일화가 있는데요...다름아닌 이 호텔에서 하룻밤을 묵은 현대카드 직원이 이 선반에 깊은 인상을 받아서 현대카드의 복합 문화 공간 “바이닐앤플라스틱, 스튜디오 블랙, 쿠킹 라이브러리” 에서 ‘레어 로우(rare raw)’와 같이 협업을 진행하였다고 합니다.
